Making the Cut in Consulting: Conquering Your Online Mock Interview with Confidence

If you are aspiring to become a consultant, you know how competitive and challenging the recruitment process can be. You have to stand out from hundreds of other candidates, showcase your skills and knowledge, and impress the interviewers with your personality and fit. And you have to do all that in a virtual setting, where communication can be more difficult and technical issues can arise.

How can you prepare for such a demanding scenario? How can you ace your online mock interview and secure your dream job in consulting? In this blog post, we will share some tips and best practices that will help you conquer your online mock interview with confidence.

Tip #1: Do your homework

Before you even apply for a consulting role, you should do some research on the industry, the firm and the role. You should know what kind of projects they work on, what kind of clients they serve, what kind of values they uphold and what kind of culture they foster. You should also know what kind of skills and competencies they are looking for in their candidates and how they evaluate them in the interview process.

Doing your homework will help you tailor your resume and cover letter to the specific firm and role as well as prepare relevant examples and stories to demonstrate your fit and potential. It will also help you anticipate the kind of questions and cases you might encounter in the online mock interview, and practice accordingly.

Tip #2: Practice, practice, practice

One of the most important aspects of preparing for an online mock interview is practicing. You should practice both the behavioral and the case interview components as well as the technical aspects of the online platform.

For the behavioral interview, you should prepare answers to common questions such as

"Tell me about yourself",

"Why do you want to work for us?",

"What are your strengths and weaknesses?",

"How do you deal with conflict?",

"How do you approach problem-solving?", etc.

You should use the STAR (Situation, Task, Action, Result) method to structure your answers, and provide specific examples from your past experiences that showcase your skills and achievements.

For the case interview, you should familiarize yourself with different types of cases (e.g., profitability, market entry, pricing etc.), frameworks (e.g., Porter's Five Forces, SWOT analysis, etc.), and calculations (e.g., breakeven analysis, ROI, etc.). You should practice solving cases under time pressure, using a clear and logical structure, asking relevant questions, making reasonable assumptions, presenting data-driven recommendations, and communicating effectively.

For the technical aspects of the online platform, you should test your equipment (e.g., microphone, camera, internet connection, etc.), check your settings (e.g., sound, video, screen sharing, etc.), and familiarize yourself with the features (e.g., chat box, whiteboard, calculator, etc.). You should also have a backup plan in case something goes wrong (e.g., alternative device, phone number, email address, etc.).

Tip #3: Dress for success

Even though you are interviewing from home, you should still dress professionally and appropriately for an online mock interview. You should wear something that is comfortable but also reflects your respect for the firm and the role. You should avoid wearing anything that is too casual (e.g., t-shirts, jeans, sneakers), too flashy (e.g., bright colors, loud patterns), or too distracting (e.g., jewelry, accessories).

Dressing for success will not only make a good impression on the interviewer but also boost your confidence and performance. It will help you get into the right mindset for the interview and show that you are serious about the opportunity.

Tip #4: Choose a suitable location

Another important factor to consider for an online mock interview is the location where you will conduct it. You should choose a place that is quiet.
